Volleyball wins two more at NYU Violet Classic







NEW YORK -- The Bates College volleyball team won both of its matches Saturday at the NYU Violet Classic, finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record and raising its record this season to 5-6. The Bobcats defeated Hunter College on Saturday morning 3-2 (25-16, 15-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-10), followed by a 3-1 (27-25, 18-25, 25-10, 25-16) defeat of Centenary (N.J.) College.

Sophomores Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.), both named to the All-Tournament Team afterward, led the way in the win over Hunter, as Russell recorded a career-high 15 kills to go with 21 digs, while Pyne collected 10 kills, two service aces and four blocks. There were many other big contributors, including junior Grace Haessler (Portland, Ore.) with six kills, 44 assists and 13 digs; junior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) with eight kills and three aces in just three sets; first-year Sarah Jacobson (Lake Forest, Ill.) with seven kills and eight digs; first-year Jennifer Youngpeter (Mobile, Ala.) with 14 digs and two aces; and sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) with 15 digs and three aces.

The strong play continued against Centenary, as Russell totaled 10 kills and 12 digs, Gee had 13 kills and two blocks, Pyne amassed 1 kills, three aces, seven digs and a pair of blocks and Haessler totaled eight kills, 41 assists, 14 digs and two blocks. Senior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) had six kills and 11 digs, while first-year Andrea Lauden (San Francisco, Calif.) collected four kills and two blocks. Jacobson and Gattuso had 10 digs apiece in the match.

Bates plays host to Maine Maritime Academy in a non-conference match on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
