Volleyball wraps up California trip vs. Whittier, La Verne

WHITTIER, Calif. -- The Bates College volleyball team concluded its trip to Southern California on Saturday with a pair of losses at Whittier College. The Bobcats lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-19) to the host Poets, then 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-17) again to the University of La Verne Leopards.

Junior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) had seven kills and 10 digs in the match against Whittier (6-19), while sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) added eight kills and eight digs. First-year setter Jennifer Youngpeter (Mobile, Ala.) handed out 16 assists to go with nine digs and two aces. Shannon Orlins and Courtney Dickerson paced the Poets with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

Gee tied for the match high in kills against La Verne (13-10) with nine, while sophomore Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) pitched in with seven. Youngpeter had five kills and 21 assists, and Russell also had five kills. First-year Catherine Dioli (Ipswich, Mass.) collected three service aces to go with a match-high 18 digs, and senior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) chipped in with 13 digs.

Kendall Kraiss led the Leopards (13-10) with nine kills and 22 assists, while Catie Logan and Randi Toomay had eight kills apiece.

The Bobcats (7-17) return to action next weekend, concluding regular-season play with three NESCAC matches at Trinity. The Bobcats face wesleyan at Trinity on Friday at 8 p.m., followed on Saturday by matches against Connecticut College (11 a.m.) and Trinity (1:30 p.m.).
