Youth leads volleyball team in its final two matches

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates College volleyball team saw its season come to a close on Saturday with a pair of NESCAC losses played at Trinity College: 3-0 to Connecticut College and 3-1 to Trinity.

Bates finishes the year 7-20 overall and 2-8 in conference matches -- in ninth place out of 11 in the NESCAC, one spot out of next weekend's NESCAC Championship.

The Bobcats graduate only one player from this year's team, and evidence of the team's talented youth was on display Saturday. In the 25-19, 25-10, 25-15 loss to the Camels (19-6, 7-3), first-year Andrea Lauden (San Francisco, Calif.) had a team-high seven kills, while sophomore Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had five kills and 11 digs, and first-year setter Jen Youngpeter (Mobile, Ala.) contributed 14 assists and six digs.

Sophomore Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) posted 14 kills and three blocks in Bates' 25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 25-10 loss to Trinity (16-7, 5-5), while junior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) added 10 kills and 15 digs. Youngpeter totaled 33 assists and 10 digs, and Russell added 18 digs. Playing in her final match for Bates, senior Rachel Colby (Willimantic, Conn.) posted 17 digs.
