Volleyball beats Wesleyan in season finale, 3-2







LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team closed out its 2011 season by winning its first conference match of the season, prevailing by a 3-2 score over Wesleyan University. The visiting Cardinals charged back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match at 2-2, but Bates swung the momentum back in its own direction in the fifth set to win by set scores of 25-21, 25-16, 22-25, 17-25, 15-8.
Bates (6-17, 1-9 NESCAC) and Wesleyan (8-20, 1-9) finish the year in a three-way tie with Hamilton for ninth place in the conference.

Senior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) led a potent Bates attack in her final match as a Bobcat. The two-year captain had 14 kills with only four attack errors. Fellow senior Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had 11 kills and a team-high four blocks in her last match.

Junior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) had five of her 12 kills in the all-important fifth set, while first-year setter Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) passed out 40 assists, served up six aces and added three kills. Junior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the back-row defense with 14 digs, and first-year Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) added 10 digs, three blocks, nine kills and two assists in a complete all-around performance.

Monica Leslie had a big match for the Cardinals, notching 14 kills with only three attack errors, to go with a match-high six blocks. Casey Reed contributed 12 kills and five blocks, and Kim Farris added six kills and five blocks. Jeanne McPhee had 16 digs and six aces, and Claire Larson passed out 39 assists.
