Volleyball faces conference iron in Tufts, Connecticut College

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team faced two of the top teams in the NESCAC on Saturday at Bowdoin, accepting 3-0 losses to both Tufts and Connecticut College.
The Bobcats (2-12, 0-4 NESCAC) saw their two-match win streak end Saturday morning against Tufts (11-3, 4-1), with the Jumbos prevailing by set scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-14. Cara Spieler (12 kills), Kelly Brennan (10 kills) and Haley Hopper (nine kills) led a fearsome attack with 31 kills against just five attack errors combined. Kendall Lord dished out 32 assists.
Bates senior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) led Bates with five kills in the match. First-year Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) had 15 assists and two service aces, and junior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a match-high 17 digs.
The Bobcats had a better showing in the afternoon match against the Camels (11-4, 4-1), falling by set scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-19. Senior Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had eight kills and two blocks, while junior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) added six kills (with no attack errors) and four blocks. Walther totaled 23 assists and two more aces in the match, while Russell and first-year Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) came up with 15 and 13 digs, respectively. Rachel Schroff led Connecticut College with 18 kills.
Bates travels to Williams College next weekend for a pair of NESCAC matches: Oct. 7 against Hamilton at 8 p.m., followed on Oct. 8 with a match against the host Ephs at 11 a.m. The Williams match can be viewed via live video webcast.
