Volleyball improves as home opener vs. RWU progresses

LEWISTON, Maine -- Roger Williams University rose to 10-3 on the season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-22) defeat of the Bates College volleyball team in the Bobcats' home opener Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym.

Bates' loss made it an 0-2 day for the Bobcats (0-7), who were defeated 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 25-23) in their conference opener at Colby earlier in the day.

Senior captain Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.), senior assistant captain Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and junior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) led the Bates attack with eight, seven and six kills, respectively. Gee also came up with eight digs.

Danna McDonald led the Hawks with 10 kills, while Marybeth Torpey added five more. Alexa Armenti handed out 22 assists and added a team-high 11 digs. Krystie Luczynski served up five aces to go with three blocks and four kills.

First-year Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) had a team-high 17 assists for Bates, while junior assistant captain Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the back row with 17 digs.

At Colby, Gee again led the attack, with 13 kills and against only three attack errors. Pyne added 11 kills to go with a career-high seven blocks, including two solo stops. First-year Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) posted 10 kills and Schow added nine more, with Walther collecting 32 assists.

Russell led three Bobcats with double digits in digs, with 19. Getsinger and Walther added 12 and 10 digs, respectively.

Bates has its first home NESCAC match of the season tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Bowdoin. The match can be followed live via Video Webcast on First Team Broadcasting.
