WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates volleyball team took a 1-0 lead after one set against NESCAC rival Middlebury on Saturday but couldn't hold on, as the Panthers defeated the Bobcats 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-16) at Colby College.
Later on Saturday afternoon, Bates fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-11) to Amherst to drop to 3-16 overall and 0-8 in NESCAC play.
Junior middle blocker Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) played a very strong match against Middlebury (12-6, 4-3 NESCAC), recording a season-high-matching 13 kills for the second straight match, and coming up with seven blocks (one solo). Bates posted an impressive eight team blocks, but the Panthers returned the favor with nine of their own. Junior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a match-high 19 digs and first-year Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) distributed 33 assists to go with two blocks. First-year Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) had seven kills, two aces, nine digs and two blocks. Seniors Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) and Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) also had seven kills apiece.
Gee posted nine kills to lead the Bobcat attack against Amherst (15-5, 4-4), and Getsinger added five. Russell totaled 24 digs and Walther recorded 19 assists in the match. Schow had seven kills and tied first-year Hannah McGrath (Longmeadow, Mass.) for the team lead in blocks, with three.
Bates will next travel to Worcester, Mass., for a pair of matches at WPI. They'll face the host Engineers at 12:30 p.m., followed by a 2:30 match against Salve Regina.
