LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball team won its second straight on Tuesday, defeating rival Colby 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-17) in a non-conference match at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Mules (5-4), who defeated Bates 3-1 in Waterville on Sept. 17, lost their third straight. Colby was undone by 30 attack errors over the three sets, for a negative attack percentage of -.075. Bates (2-10), meanwhile, posted a strong .222 attack percentage, their best this season.
Bates played perhaps its best volleyball in the first set, ringing up 13 kills against just two errors. Junior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) and senior Chrissy Gee (San Francisco, Calif.) set the tone with four kills apiece in the set, while first-year Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) and senior Olivia Schow (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had two apiece.
Bates received three of its six team blocks in the second set.
Pyne led Bates with eight kills and six blocks. Schow added seven kills, Gee had six, Getsinger had five and first-year Hannah McGrath (Longmeadow, Mass.) had a strong effort with four kills on five attack attempts. First-year setter Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) totaled 25 assists. Junior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a team-high 13 digs, followed by Getsinger with 11.
Colby senior Mackie Sewell led the Mules with seven kills. Kate Pleasants had 16 assists and a team-high 12 digs.
Bates next plays Tufts in a NESCAC match at Bowdoin on Saturday at 11 a.m., followed immediately by another conference match against Connecticut College, also at Bowdoin at 1:30 p.m.
