Host Kean University tops volleyball 3-1 in Cougar Classic

UNION, N.J. -- With the match delayed an hour due to Bates' bus's late arrival, host Kean University won the first set with ease en route to a 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-16, 25-17) victory over the Bates volleyball team on Friday night in the Cougar Classic.

The host Cougars rose to 22-6 this season, while the Bobcats dropped to 8-13.

On Saturday at Kean, Bates will play Baptist Bible (Pa.) College at 10am, then the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at 12pm.

Aysia Peterson had 14 kills and Kaitlyn Hansen added 12 for Kean.

First-year Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) led the Bobcats with seven kills and just one attack error, along with three blocks. Fellow rookie Kelsey Berry (Hollis, N.H.) contributed six more kills, and first-year Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) had a team-high 12 digs. First-year Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) had five kills and three blocks.

The Bobcats were missing the services of senior outside hitter Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.), as well as sophomore setter Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) for the fifth straight match.
