WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates volleyball team began play in the annual MIT Invitational with a pair of losses to two of the top 10 teams in New England on Friday at Brandeis. MIT, rated eighth in New England, defeated Bates 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-17), followed by No. 9 Brandeis beating Bates 3-1 (27-25, 25-19, 25-27, 26-24).
The Bobcats (5-5) play two more at the annual tournament on Saturday, also at Brandeis, taking on Mount Ida at 11am, then facing New England's sixth-ranked team, Springfield, at 2pm.

In Bates' closely-played match against Brandeis, Senior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a career-high 13 kills, while fellow senior captain Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) also had 13 kills to go with seven service aces.
Sophomore Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) passed out 38 assists and totaled a career-high six kills.
First-year Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) had a team-high 22 digs and four aces.
