WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bates volleyball team defeated Mount Ida 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-21, 25-16) and lost to Springfield 3-0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-18) on Saturday to wrap up play in the annual MIT Invitational. All four of Bates' matches at the tournament were played at Brandeis University.
First-year Kelsey Berry (Hollis, N.H.) led the Bobcats (6-6) with 10 kills against Mount Ida, while senior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) added nine and senior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) had eight. First-year Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) had a team-high 15 digs and four aces, while Russell and sophomore Tess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) had 13 digs apiece. First-year Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) had six blocks, and Pyne added four more.
In the loss to Springfield, ranked sixth in New England, first-year Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) had a team-high seven kills. Schepel and first-year Nicole Cueli (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
The Bobcats finished 10th out of 14 teams in the tournament, with its losses all coming against three of the top nine ranked teams in New England Division III, according to the New England Women's Volleyball Association. On Friday night at Brandeis, MIT, rated eighth in New England, defeated Bates 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-17), followed by No. 9 Brandeis beating Bates 3-1 (27-25, 25-19, 25-27, 26-24).
In Bates’ closely-played match against Brandeis, Russell had a career-high 13 kills, while Pyne also had 13 kills to go with seven service aces. Walther passed out 38 assists and totaled a career-high six kills. Schepel had a team-high 22 digs and four aces.
The 3-0 loss to MIT on Friday was highlighted by six kills apiece from Pyne and Wendel.
