LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College volleyball picked up its first NESCAC win of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Colby College 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20) at Alumni Gym. It is Bates' (8-10, 1-5 NESCAC) second win in a row over Colby, and their seventh win over the Mules in their past eight meetings.
Senior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) led four players with kill totals in the double digits, picking up 15 of them in addition to a season-high eight blocks (two solo), fueling Bates' season-high total of nine team blocks. First-years Mary Deneen (Windsor, Conn.) and Kelsey Berry (Hollis, N.H.) had 11 kills apiece, with Berry adding in 13 digs, and senior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) pitched in with 10 kills and 18 digs.
Colby (8-7, 1-5 NESCAC) received a match-high 18 kills against five errors on 55 attack attempts from Natalie Roy (.236), as well as three aces and 17 digs. Maggie Taylor added 12 kills and a match-high 25 digs, and Lily Kramlich-Taylor came up with eight kills, as Kate Pleasants passed out 48 assists.
The two teams played nip-and-tuck first and second sets, with Bates able to pull away at the end in both cases. Colby only fired on all cylinders in the third set, attacking for a .312 percentage in that frame en route to the Mules' lone point. Bates saved its best for last, attacking at a .278 percentage.
Bates travels to play Connecticut College on Friday at 8pm (Video), then is at Wesleyan on Saturday at 2pm. Colby plays the same two opponents as Bates this weekend.
