Volleyball splits two matches at St. Joe's tournament

STANDISH, Maine -- The Bates volleyball team split two matches on opening day of the 2012 season on Friday at the St. Joseph's College Invitational. The host Monks rallied for a 3-1 win over the Bobcats, before Bates defeated Lyndon State in the nightcap (details to come).

Bates (1-1) will face Husson tomorrow at 10am, followed by either the championship or consolation match of the four-team round robin at noon.

The Bobcats put the Monks (4-0) on their heels with a 25-14 opening-set victory, but St. Joe's rebounded with three consecutive wins in a competitive and well-played contest. The Monks snapped a nine-match losing streak against the Bobcats dating to 1997.

Sarah Hawkes led the Monks with nine kills and added 14 digs and four total blocks in the win.

Senior captain Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) tallied 37 digs, six kills and four aces, sophomore Jess Walther (Santa Monica, Calif.) registered 36 assists and eight digs, and first-year Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) tacked on seven kills. First-year Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) added 17 digs.
