MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Wesleyan swept NESCAC rival Bates in women’s volleyball Saturday afternoon to claim its first NESCAC victory of the season. Bates fell to 8-12 overall and 1-7 in NESCAC play, while Wesleyan improved to 5-12 overall with a 1-8 NESCAC record. With the victory, Wesleyan avenged a 3-2 loss to Bates in its final match of the 2011 season.
The first two sets were close affairs, with Wesleyan winning the first set, 25-21, and the second set, 25-23. In the third set, however, the Cardinals put away the Bobcats with a 25-6 victory, featuring two five-point runs and a seven-point run at the end of the set to secure the match for Wesleyan.
For Bates, first-year Laryssa Schepel (Flemington, N.J.) had a team-high 11 digs. Senior Nicole Russell (Boca Raton, Fla.) had a team-high five kills, with senior Eliza Pyne (Atherton, Calif.) and first-year Brynn Wendel (Boxford, Mass.) close behind with four kills apiece. Sophomore Miranda Shapiro (New York, N.Y.) led the team with 13 assists. Pyne also registered five blocks -- one solo and four assisted.
For the Cardinals, first-year Sofia Davila registered a match-high 12 digs. Junior Monica Leslie amassed nine kills, followed by juniors Kim Farris and Kate Centofanti, who claimed seven kills apiece. They were aided by freshman Brenna Tharnstrom, who came away with 29 assists. Leslie and senior Laura Volgenau led in blocking,with Leslie accumulating one solo and six assisted blocks and Volgeanu accumulating six assisted blocks.
The Bobcats next travel to Union, N.J., for a non-conference match at Kean University on Friday, Oct. 19, at 6pm. Bates stays at Kean the following day to take on Baptist Bible (Pa.) at 10am and Merchant Marine at noon.
