CASTINE, Maine -- Sophomore Taylor Stafford-Smith tallied a match-high 15 kills and the Bates volleyball team defeated Maine Maritime by a score of 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 19-25, 25-19) Tuesday night.
Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif.) recorded an impressive .448 hitting percentage on the evening to lead Bates (5-5) to victory. She added three blocks and two digs. Senior captain Jacqueline Forney (Bloomington, Ind.) dished out a match-high 37 assists and sophomore Gabi Eustache (New York, N.Y.) added 15 digs. Junior Claire Naughton (Darien, Conn.) and first-year Angel Echipue (Munich, Germany) chipped in seven and six kills respectively. Echipue recorded a match-high seven blocks.
The Bobcats took the first two sets before the Mariners (10-7) rallied to take set three. Bates closed the match out by winning set four by a count of 25-19.
Alexa Cacacie, Maggie MacMahon and Jessica D'Auria led the Mariners with 11 kills each, while D'Auria tallied a double-double adding 10 digs. Sydney Adams recorded a double-double of her own, with a team-high 29 assists and 10 digs, while also contributing eight kills, two blocks and an ace. Maria Perez tallied a team-best 15 digs, while adding an ace and an assist.
Bates finished with a .240 hitting percentage while the Mariners recorded a hitting percentage of .200. The Mariners were hurt by 12 service errors and 19 attack errors. Bates limited themselves to five service errors and 13 attack errors. Each team recorded four service aces.
The Bobcats are back in action Friday at Middlebury. The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m.
