HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates volleyball team defeated Trinity 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-14) on Saturday to conclude the regular season in the Bobcats' final tune-up for the NESCAC tournament.
Bates (12-13, 4-6 NESCAC) was paced by first-year Delaney Mayfield (Santa Barbara, Calif.), first-year Angel Echipue (Munich, Germany) and sophomore Taylor Stafford-Smith (Calabasas, Calif.) on the attack. The trio combined for 21 kills, led by Echipue's eight kills on a .421 attack percentage and Stafford-Smith's seven kills.
Sophomore Julia Panepinto had a game-high four aces with 10 digs for the Bobcats while sophomore Gabi Eustache (New York, N.Y.) finished with 17 digs, and senior captain Jacqueline Forney (Bloomington, Ind.) had 28 assists and 12 digs.
The Bobcats finished with a kill percentage of .248 while holding the Bantams (7-14, 1-9 NESCAC) to a .064 kill percentage. Bates committed only four attack errors and six different Bobcats recorded a solo block in the match.
Trinity was led by sophomore Colette Scheffers who finished with 11 kills and 13 digs, along with junior co-captain Rachel Underwood who had three aces and 15 digs. Sophomore Wyllie Boughton added a pair of blocks and 12 digs while rookie Jessica Yang led all players with 24 assists.
The Bobcats will take on top seed Tufts in the NESCAC quarterfinals Friday at 5:00 p.m. Bates will make its third straight postseason appearance and is the No. 8 seed for the third time. The Bobcats, who are looking for their first postseason win since 2003, won four of their last five NESCAC matches to close the regular season. The Bobcats' 12 wins so far this season are their most since 2009.
