Goldstein leads Bates women to third place at state meet

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine -- The Bates College women's cross country team finished third out of nine teams Saturday as they hosted the 2007 Maine Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships at Pineland Farms. It was the Bobcats' eighth consecutive top-three finish at the meet.


Bowdoin took five of the top 10 positions in the women's race, led by Laura Onderko, who covered the 5-kilometer course in 18:42.5, nearly eight seconds ahead of runner-up Anna King of Colby (18:50.4). It was the first state championship for the Polar Bear women since 2003.

Colby was the runner-up in the women's race with 38 points to Bowdoin's 26, followed by Bates (70), Southern Maine (151), UMaine-Farmington (163), the University of New England (178), St. Joseph's (178) and UMaine-Presque Isle (215).

Bates senior captain Aviva Goldstein (Manchester, N.H.) led the Bobcats by finishing fourth overall out of 137 runners, in a time of 19:32.5. A pack of Bobcats took six out of the seven spots between 15th and 20th overall, led by sophomore Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) in 20:02.10, junior Allie Goldstein (Needham, Mass.) in 20:03.40, sophomore Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) in 20:07.0, sophomore Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) in 20:11.2, sophomore Esther Kendall (Ridgeway, Ontario) in 20:12.70 and first-year Jennifer Mitton (Reisterstown, Md.) in 20:13.3.

Bates next competes at the NESCAC Championships on Oct. 27 at Williams College.
