NEW ORLEANS -- Bates College senior Kerri Leonhardt (Milford, N.J.) has earned 2010 Division III All-Academic Cross Country status, announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships.

Beyond Leonhardt, the Bates women's cross country team as a whole was recognized as one of 167 USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Teams. To earn this recognition, the Bobcats needed a cumulative team grade point average of 3.10 or better and have compiled a score (finished at least five runners) at their respective NCAA regional championship. Bates' cumulative team GPA after the Fall 2010 semester was a robust 3.39.

Leonhardt capped her breakthrough senior season with the best race of her career at the 2010 Division III New England Regional Cross Country Championship, held in Williamstown, Mass., on Nov. 13. In what was, remarkably, her first time competing at the New England Division III Regionals, Leonhardt earned All-New England honors (top 35) by finishing 33rd among 336 competitors, covering the 6-kilometer course at Mt. Greylock High School in a personal record time of 23:25.1. The senior captain was at about 55th place after the first mile, but she steadily passed competitor after competitor, eventually moving up to 33rd place in the best race of her career.

An economics major, Leonhardt is also a distance runner on the Bates women's track and field teams. Last Saturday at the Valentine Invitational at Boston University, she qualified for the ECAC Division III Indoor Championship in the 3,000-meter run, with a time of 10:49.89.
