Women's cross country places 9th at ECAC Championship








BRISTOL, R.I. -- The Bates women's cross country team some of its up-and-comers on Saturday at the ECAC Division III Cross Country Championships, to good effect. With the Bobcats' top runners held out, Bates finished ninth out of 39 teams overall at the meet, held on the 6-kilometer course at Colt State Park.

With 298 points, Bates was close behind eighth-place Wesleyan (292) and far ahead of ninth-place University of New England (391).

Sophomore Winnie Chelangat (Kericho, Kenya) led the way for the Bobcats, covering the course in 24:09.68 to finish 31st overall out of 276 competitors. First-year Mira Carey-Hatch (Laconia, N.H.) finished 52nd in 24:44.44, followed closely behind by senior captain Alex Alberto (North Reeading, Mass.) in 54th at 24:46.69. Rounding out Bates' seven runners were sophomore Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.) in 64th, senior Alex Steverson (New London, N.H.) in 99th, junior Rebecca Dugan (Port Murray, N.J.) in 117th and senior Liz Rowley (Evanston, Ill.) in 149th.

Bates travels to Williams next Saturday, Nov. 13, for the NCAA New England Regional Championships, beginning at 12 p.m. at Mt. Greylock High School in Williamstown, Mass.
