Women's cross country places third at state championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates College women's cross country team finished third out of nine teams on Saturday at the State of Maine Cross Country Championships at Bowdoin. It is Bates' 11th consecutive top-three finish at the state meet.

Colby won the meet, followed by Bowdoin, Bates, Southern Maine, the University of New England, UMaine-Farmington, St. Joseph's, UMaine-Presque Isle and Unity.

Senior captain Kerri Leonhardt (Milford, N.J.) led the Bobcats with a 13th-place individual finish out of 134 runners, finishing the 5-kilometer course in 19:53.57. A pack of Bates runners followed, with Bates runners claiming 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 21st and 22nd places in the race. In order, those runners were first-year Katharine Nixon (Medfield, Mass.), senior Jen Mitton (Reisterstown, Md.), sophomore Alicia Fannon (Haverhill, Mass.), first-year Meg Ogilvie (Hopedale, Mass.), junior Jenny Monsulick (Readfield, Maine) and sophomore Winnie Chelangat (Kericho, Kenya).

Bates has next weekend off of competition, then heads to Hamilton College for the NESCAC Championship on Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
