Women's cross country takes seventh place at NESCACs

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The Bates College women's cross country team put forth its best performance so far this season on Saturday at the NESCAC Cross Country Championship. On an exceedingly wet and muddy 6-kilometer course at Hamilton College Golf Course, Bates placed seventh out of 11 teams, up one spot from last year's finish.

"People ran really smart and in control for us, and did well at the end," said head coach Jay Hartshorn. "It was definitely our best performance of the year as a team."

Bates scored 203 points, edging Wesleyan (207) for seventh place while also outperforming host Hamilton, Trinity and Connecticut College.

Sophomore Alicia Fannon (Haverhill, Mass.) led the Bobcats in 32nd place out of 128 runners overall, with a time of 23:53.9. Senior Kerri Leonhardt (Milford, N.J.) and junior Jenny Monsulick (Readfield, Maine) were close behind in 37th and 38th places at 24:02.0 and 24:04.2, respectively.

First-year Meg Ogilvie (Hopedale, Mass.) ran an outstanding race, finishing 43rd, and senior Jen Mitton (Reisterstown, Md.) rounded out the scorers in 53rd place. Sophomore Lindsay Cullen (Newburyport, Mass.) and first-yar Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.) made Bates' top seven at 55th and 63rd places, respectively.

Bates will run at the ECAC Division III Championships next Saturday, Nov. 6, at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I. (12 p.m.).
