Fannon, Cullen lead women's cross country to third place at states







NEW GLOUCESTER, Mass. -- Bates juniors Alicia Fannon and Lindsay Cullen led the Bobcat women's cross country team to third place on Saturday at the Maine Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships, hosted by Bates at Pineland Farms.

Fannon (Haverhill, Mass.) and Cullen (Newburyport, Mass.) finished sixth and seventh overall, respectively, to claim the final two places on the All-State team and lead Bates to its best team score at the meet since finishing second in 2006, with 58 points. Fannon covered the 5-kilometer course in 19:21, right ahead of Cullen at 19:22.

Colby claimed its fourth straight women's team title at the meet with 41 points, followed by Bowdoin with 44, and Bates took third place among the 11 competing teams for the fifth straight year.

Colby junior Berol Dewdney led the way for the Mules, finishing second overall, two seconds behind individual champion, Southern Maine junior Molly Carl finished the 5K course in 19:01 for the individual title, the Huskies' first individual champion since 1999.

Bates had three more runners in the top 20: senior captain Jenny Monsulick (Readfield, Maine) in 12th at 19:51, first-year Elena Jay (West Hartford, Conn.) in 14th at 20:08 and first-year Sarah Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) in 19th at 20:19. Bates' displacers were sophomore Mira Carey-Hatch (Laconia, N.H.) in 23rd at 20:32 and sophomore Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.) in 28th at 20:53.

Next up for the Bobcats is the NESCAC Cross Country Championship, taking place at Amherst on Oct. 29. The women's race starts at 11 a.m., followed by the men's race at 12 p.m.
