Women's XC shows advances in opening meet vs. Colby

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine -- The Bates women's cross country team opened its season with an encouraging performance against Colby in the rivals' Class Relays meet, a recent tradition between the teams held at Bates' Pineland Farms home course. Colby won 64-46 under a modified scoring system in which high score wins.

The score was closer than last year's 74-36 margin, thanks in part to a close Junior/Senior race in which the Mules edged the Bobcats 30-25. Colby junior Berol Dewdney won the race by covering the 2.8-mile course in 17:10, but Bates junior Lindsay Cullen (Newburyport, Mass.) had an impressive season debut with a second-place time of 17:26. Junior Alicia Fannon (Haverhill, Mass.) was close behind in fourth place, with Colby junior Layne Schwab claiming third place in 17:28. Rounding out Bates' top five in the race were senior captain Jenny Monsulick (Readfield, Maine) in seventh (18:13), junior Lisa Reedich (Harvard, Mass.) in eighth (18:21 and junior Amanda Solch (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) in ninth at 18:34.

Colby first-year Eva Lauer won the women's First-Year/Sophomore race in 17:13, and sophomore Kate Connolly came second in 18:09, but Bates rookies Elena Jay (West Hartford, Conn.) and Sarah Fusco (Cheshire, Conn.) took third and fourth in 18:16 and 18:18, respectively. Rounding out the scoring for the Bobcats were sophomore Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.) in 11th (18:48), sophomore Merrill Brady (Concord, Mass.) in 13th (19:00) and sophomore Devin Tatro (Haverhill, Mass.) in 14th (19:01).

Bates competes at the Maine Invitational next Saturday at Bowdoin, with the women's race starting at 2:30 p.m. and the men's race following at 3:15.
