BOSTON -- The No. 19 nationally ranked Bates women's cross country team finished 18th out of 43 teams overall, and fourth among 14 Division III squads, at the all-divisions Open New England Championships Saturday at Franklin Park.
Among Division III teams, the Bobcats trailed only Middlebury (5th place), MIT (7th) and Tufts (12th) in the team scoring, and ahead of such rivals as Colby (24th), Amherst (25th) and Wellesley (30th).
Senior Kallie Nixon (Medfield, Mass.) and sophomore Hannah Zeltner (Bedford, N.H.) finished 65th and 71st overall, respectively, to lead Bates. Nixon covered the course in 18:48, Zeltner in 18:51. Junior Elena Jay (West Hartford, Conn.) came next in 103rd among 283 runners in the women's varsity race, at 19:08, with senior Gabrielle Naranja (Fort Kent, Maine) 112th in 19:13 and senior Mira Carey-Hatch (Laconia, N.H.) 124th in 19:20 to round out the Bobcats' team scoring.
The meet's sub-varsity race saw the Bobcats place 11th among 29 teams, fifth in Division III.
Senior Julia Hanlon (Cambridge, Mass.) finished 60th among 299 runners, followed closely by sophomore Addie Cullenberg (Farmington, Maine) in 62nd at 19:57. Senior Merrill Brady (Concord, Mass.) was 96th in 20:29, followed by first-years Jessica Wilson (Cumberland, Maine) and Molly Chisholm (Wayland, Mass.) at 20:38 and 20:43, respectively.
Bates travels to Colby College next Saturday for the Maine State Championships, with the starting gun scheduled for 11am.
