HADLEY, Mass. -- Senior Jessica Wilson and junior Katherine Cook were officially named Bates women's cross country's first All-NESCAC duo since 1992 and Jay Hartshorn was named coach of the year as the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its all-conference teams Tuesday.
Wilson (Cumberland, Maine) and Cook (South Burlington, Vt.) both receive Second Team All-NESCAC honors for placing among the second seven runners at Saturday's NESCAC Championship, hosted by Colby in Waterville, Maine. Wilson placed ninth overall, covering the 6-kilometer course in 23:11.4, and Cook placed 14th in 23:26.4.
Wilson and Cook helped the No. 20 nationally ranked Bobcats place third out of 11 teams, their best performance since the third-place 1987 team.
The No. 20 nationally ranked Bobcats scored 109 points, second only to No. 5 Williams (47) and No. 6 Tufts (72), and ahead of both No. 8 Middlebury (113) and No. 23 Amherst (132). Bates placed fifth at the meet a year ago.
It is the first NESCAC Coach of the Year honor for Hartshorn, now in her 12th season as head coach of Bates women's cross country and track and field. Over the past five years, Hartshorn has coached Bates to four top-five finishes at the NESCAC Championship meet.
Bates next competes at NCAA Regionals, taking place in Westfield, Mass., on Nov. 12. The Bobcats will hope their performance there can propel them to their first team bid to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 19 since 2012.
