NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine -- The No. 24 nationally ranked Bates women's cross country team outscored Colby convincingly 78-32 in its first official meet of the 2017 season, the Bates-Colby Class Races, Saturday on Bates' home course at Pineland Farms.
Under the annual meet's modified scoring system, both teams' seniors and sophomores combined to race against one another, and first-years and juniors in the other, with the top five finishers scoring points, and the higher score winning. The Bobcats won in commanding fashion in both races, 40-15 in the sophomore/senior race and 38-17 in the first-year/junior race.
Bates swept the top five places in the senior/sophomore race as senior captain Katherine Cook (South Burlington, Vt.) and sophomore Olivia LaMarche (Lynnfield, Mass.) both ran the fastest time of the day, covering the 2.84-mile course in 16:53, with Cook credited as the overall winner.
Senior captain Mary Szatkowski (Buxton, Maine) took third place in 17:57, followed by senior Rachael Rosow (Avon, Conn.) in 18:23 and senior captain Callie Reynolds (West Hartford, Conn.) also in 18:23. Colby sophomore Rebecca Berube led the Mules in sixth place overall (18:47).
Bates also swept the top four places in the first-year/junior race, led by the tandem of junior Ayden Eickhoff (Corvallis, Mont.) and first-year Abby Hamilton (Yarmouth, Maine) in first and second places with identical 17:32 times. Junior Sarah Rothmann (Andover, Mass.) took third in 17:49, followed by junior Hannah Austin (North Yarmouth, Maine) in 17:58. Junior Wendy Memishian (Medway, Mass.) took seventh place (19:02) as Bates' final scorer, following Colby first-year Catie Riley (18:35) and Colby junior Mahal Alvarez-Backus (18:43).
Bates hosts Tufts, Wellesley and WPI in the Bates Invitational next Saturday at Pineland Farms, with the women's race at 11:45am and the men's race at 11am.
